About this role

• Together with your team, you lead all database & persistence efforts in the Weaviate Core product. This includes object storage, inverted index storage, bitmap indexes, columnar indexes, and similar index structures.
• Together with the Cloud and Applied Research teams, your team is one of 3 teams that own the Weaviate Core product.
• You obtain the requirements for all storage solutions from internal and external stakeholders and prioritize the team’s work accordingly.
• You design, deliver, and improve upon our existing storage solutions that are used by some of the biggest and most demanding players in the industry. For this, you focus on large-scale solutions with optimal performance and massive concurrency.
• You design strategies to constantly evolve our storage solutions without breaking changes for our users, for example, through automatic migration options.
• You mentor and lead your team in building data stores from the ground up, including those new to this space.
• You are responsible for the excellent quality of our storage solutions and lead the team toward using automated testing, stress testing, load testing, chaos engineering, and comparable techniques.

What we are looking for

• You are either an Engineering manager with a very strong technical background in the database space or an engineer in the database space looking to transition into management.
• You love balancing varying disciplines, such as engineering, product, stakeholder management, and team leadership, without losing the focus on engineering excellence.
• You are very familiar with the architecture, design, and various trade-offs involved with common storage mechanisms, such as B+trees, LSM stores, columnar stores, and others.
• You are experienced with various database compression techniques and know how to accelerate compressed data stores, for example, through the usage of SIMD techniques.
• You are knowledgeable and passionate about search, including highly-efficient BM25 & hybrid search at a large scale.
• You are passionate about building highly scalable, high-throughput solutions for the AI and cloud-native age.
